Sean Tan, Chief Operating Officer, Football Asia
Sean is a qualified lawyer and practised law for 12 years. His areas of practice were in commercial litigation and arbitration, as well as corporate work. He was senior partner in the last two firms he was with. A significant part of Sean's practice saw him travel extensively around Asia to develop markets and new business. Sean left practice in 2008 to take up the challenge of setting up and managing a private equity fund in China. The fund focused on investments in China.
As a result of his previous work experience, Sean had developed a strong network of contacts across key Asian markets, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, India, China, Japan and Korea, and is intimately familiar with how business is transacted in these countries.
A keen sportsman in his younger days, Sean continued with his involvement in sports with his appointment as Legal Counsel to Team Singapore for the Beijing Olympics in 2008, and was based in Beijing with Team Singapore for the duration of the Olympic Games. Sean was tasked to handle appeals and potential disputes with the Court of Arbitration for Sport ("CAS"), and is familiar with the Arbitration Rules for the Olympic Games, the Ad-Hoc Division of the CAS set up in Beijing for the Olympic Games, and the notification/appeal procedures. Sean is also familiar with the World Anti-Doping Code and the Singapore National Olympic Council Anti-Doping Rules. Sean also served as a member of Team Singapore's Disciplinary Committee that oversaw the athletes' discipline for the Olympic Games.
Sean returned to Singapore in 2009 to set up Football Asia with Jon Collins. Sean has a strong interest in the commercial aspects of sport, particularly football, and has been responsible along with Jon in developing new and creative strategies for football clubs to monetise their brands in Asia, and building their fan bases here. Sean's extensive network of contacts throughout Asia provides an easy platform for doing business in Asia's different markets. |
